MAP testing starts on November 27 and continues until winter break. Please ensure your student has a set of headphones for testing.

Students play outside, even if the weather is cold. Coats, hats and gloves are needed daily.

Winter break starts on December 21; and students return for second semester on January 8.

What we are learning:
Math - teen numbers in depth. We are also working with partners of numbers (math facts) for numbers 1-5, both addition and subtraction equations.

Phonics (Fundations) - we have covered almost all the 26 letters of the alphabet, and are ready to put them to work. Knowing that there are about 50 different vowels combinations, and many more phonics rules, the process is still in its infancy, but we have a start! We will concentrate on tapping out three letter (c-v-c) words, and learning how to read nonsense words for our next Dibels assessment in December.

We are also starting to learn the five diagraphs: wh, ch, sh, th and -ck. In addition, we will be working on the endings for the past tense (-ed), plurals (-s, -es) and the -ing suffixes.

Reading - Kindergartners are moving from more familiar texts to reading increasingly difficult books with greater independence - more words, more lines, new and longer words. Our hope is that you and your student are setting aside time to read at home too.

Writing - "How to" writing is our present focus. Students will be writing about topics in which they are experts (swimming, tying shoes, riding a bike). They will be drawing and writing about how to do something or make something. It will be helpful if you use the words, first, next, and last, at home in your daily schedules.

Science - Our next unit will be on the forces behind movement.
